We'll be fine in '09!
Well, there is a murmur of excitement around the club; the cold is here but the birds will be chirping soon as spring nears us and Elmington Park will be graced with the sound of the thud of leather against many a boot. I am looking forward to seeing all the talented familiar faces this year along with the hope of blooding some new ones.
I have a few ideas and changes this year that I believe will be for the better. With four USA Revo boys returning I am looking to give a key role to Luke "Ooga Booga" Nemeth to help maximize his attacking style and watch out for Dave "Walka" Walker this year as I think we will see the best season yet as he will step up to a key role. Last year's Best and Fairest Dee "Weeman" Vsetecka along with Jeff "Peeps" Persson will be playing utility roles for us that will help give us options around the ground. Nick Parker, Justin "JD" Davis, Travis "Quig" Quigley, Mischa Nemeth, and Bo Link will all play valuable roles again for the Roos this year giving us experience and strength we always look to.
Also, look for the return of the Red Headband this year as with a year off to recover his knee we will see Pete Anderson ready to contribute. 2008 Rookie of the Year Blair Morris is showing signs of healing from his setback at the end of last season. And will the rumors be true as we may see the return of Brien "Kitten" Blandford to the field of battle? A couple of stray players from Dallas and Florida may be residing in Music City that will boost the ranks. And look for the return of Chris "Lawn" Moerman and the Bagman's goal hunt this year as he looks to dominate again and vie for a second USFooty goal kicking title.
All-in-all 2009 looks to be promising with the hope of finding a couple of strong American additions along with the hope of finding an Aussie or two that will strengthen the ranks of the Roo boys.
The "Aussie Cougar Prince" himself, Damian Serong is looking to give us a second year of good footy smarts and talent with his open the corridor style. Damian is also looking to bring out a Czech Republic ex-soccer star who showed plenty of natural ability during an introductory training run late last year.
Our 2009 draw is more favorable this year, especially on the road, but we will have to be on our guard with the ever improving MAAFL teams we come up against.
The 2009 Recruitment Day on 7th March at 1pm at Elmington Park will be a kick off to our 2009 season training. I am conducting the kick off with a combination of fitness, skill drills, long kicking comp and in game drills along with a short 2 x 15 minute exhibition match.
PLEASE! Help us get a great turn out come support or bring a potential player and introduce him into this great game of FOOTY! This will be a fun day and a chance to get the veterans excited and the new recruits hooked. Who knows who we will introduce as a potential star of the future?
