The 2009 Footy campaign opens this Saturday March 28th against fellow MAAFL competitors Baton Rouge Tigers. The Tigers and the Roos have been battling every year since 2005 when the Tigers were founded in bayou country just north of New Orleans.

While the Kangaroos have yet to lose to the Tigers, going 6-0 so far, several games have been quite close and they have always been spirited affairs. While last year was not close on the scoreboard, the Tigers are represented by several outstanding players and are working feverishly to develop their recruiting ground, the college program at LSU.

The Tigers are led by founder Pat Muller who was near the top of the USFooty goal kicking competition in 2008 despite playing in fewer games than nearly all the other top kickers. Robbo Montanaro will be another key player to keep an eye on with his multiple year of experience. And the Tigers are proud to have their first ever US Revolution player, Mickey Kleinhenz fresh off his stint with the Revos as they look to get their new blood up to speed as quickly as possible.

The Kangaroos will be led by their on-field spiritual leader Luke "Captain Caveman" Nemeth for another season. Supporting him will be three US Revolution players in Dee "Weeman" Vsetecka, Dave "Walka" Walker, and Jeff "Peeps" Persson. Don't forget the Aussie bigman Damian "What" Serong "with that" and be sure to watch for the 2008 USFootyNews champion goal kicker himself, Chris "Bagman" Moerman.

The Kangaroos will clearly have the experience and will be heavily favored going in, but nothing is sure in footy. Head Coach Marty Thompson will be looking for places to slot in his 10 new recruits and trying various combinations that he has been dreaming about in the off-season.

In another interesting side note: This game will be the 149th club game for the Rooboys, making their trip to Florida in April the sesquicentennial match (there's your Big Word of the Day!) In 12 years, the Roos have posted a 91-57 mark, which means that they have a great shot at posting their 100th club win this season! Check out the team history details for all time, each season, each opponent, and team/individual records in addition to career games played. This last table is not yet complete, so if you played for the Roos, be sure to send in your details and get your game credits.

Lastly - look for the resurrection of the Nashville Kangaroos Footy Guide this weekend. I saw a preview and it is impressive!
